The Joy Luck Club

Abuse of Power: In Magpies, abuse of power is present in both Rose's and An-Mei's stories. An-Mei's mother was abused by Wu Tsing because her mother was too weak to resist. Ted also did the same. Both men also hide their true self from their wives. Wu Tsing, and his rich merchant lifestyle with his big mansion cloaked his evil personality. Ted also pretends for a long time that his marriage with Rose is still in one piece when he is already courting another woman. Also, An-Mei realizes that Rose is suffering the same fate her mother suffered, that is, not standing up for what is right. After much advice from her mother Rose stands up to Ted and demands that she keep the house.
Excited to Marry: In Ying-Ying's early stages in life was waiting to pounce very early so when she got the opportunity, that is when the man in the wedding flirts with her, she falls for him right away. She marries the man but he abandons her soon after. Ying-Ying does not want Lena to do the same but she too marries Harold and is unhappy. She cannot bear to see Lena living in this misery.
Modern America vs. Traditional China: I think that in this chapter there is a clear comparison between the ways of America and the traditions of China. There are many descriptions of how China is very different such as the building with bamboo poles as supports with men working without safety support. Chinese people are "not in a rush to get ahead, unlike the people in America" I believe that this theme is not only present in this chapter but throughout the entire book as well when the mothers are always following traditions.
