Digital Rights

In The Rights of Kids in the Digital Age, Jon Katz discusses his viewpoints on children interacting and advancing with digital technology. Individuals have the right to freedom; however, the rights are held against some children when speaking of digital technology. Although guidelines for children are mandatory, many parents feel that blocking the offensive websites will help their children, but in turn "rather than preparing their kids for the world they"ll have to live in," Jon Katz reminds us "these parents insist on preparing them for a world that no longer exists" (120). It's not an issue of well-being and responsibility simply because it is critical for children to possess "some basic rights in the digital age," states Jon Katz. (120) As long as children have or can develop a sense of morality, responsibility, and logical reasoning, "blocking, censoring, and banning should be the last resort in dealing with children, not the first" (Katz 120). If children are continually reamed with the idea that blocking information is the reasonable solution to a problem, Katz states that in the future "some children reared on this stuff will inevitably grow up thinking that the way to deal with topics we don't like is to block them-remove them from our vision and consciousness" (127). Now is the time to introduce the opportunities that today's children have accessible. We should not limit the children of the 21st century to anything less of what is offered within the technology age; "the digital world owes it to children to defend their rights as zealously as it defends its own" (Katz 127). .
