Skunks

Skunks are dumb, smelly animals that carry rabies. This statement could be farther from the truth as long as you remove their scent glands, and have them spayed or neutered. Skunks happen to be even more intelligent then either cats or dogs. They can be extremely friendly animals both loving and playful. Most people don't know that a skunk can even be trained to use unscented cat litter! A skunk however is curious and active. You will need to give it plenty of attention to shape it into a domestic animal. The results will be rewarded by having an entertaining pet.
A lot of people have the misconception that all skunks have rabies. Although it is true that in the wild a good majority of skunks carry rabies, skunks need to be infected by another animal that carries the disease. Since there are no current approved rabies vaccines for skunks, if your pet skunk bites someone they will have to test the animal for rabies. By testing the animals it means that they cut of its head and check a gland inside its brain to see if it carries the disease. Of course if it is found that the skunk doesn't contain rabies, it is still left headless and not a very good pet at this point. If you play gentle with your skunk it will not become violent and bite someone. Also don't let your skunk be exposed to animals outside where it could possibly become infected. As long as precautions are undertaken your skunk should not contract rabies.
When bringing home a skunk there are a few things that you will need to do to have your skunk be tame when it grows out of a kitten. First thing you need to do is to designate a room in your house that skunk may not be able to leave. Limiting the skunk to one room will familiarize the skunk with its environment. In doing this the skunk will be feel more relaxed and comfortable as it gets to know its new home. In this new room put a litter box in one corner. It is important to get unscented litter because they will not use the scented crystals or any of that other fancy litter.
