In Shakespear's play "Macbeth", written in the 17th century, a man called Macbeth does everything to be and remain king. After his first murder he falls in a trance and nearly "forgets the taste of fear".
He kills his King, his best friend and even a woman and her child for selfish reasons only.
After the witches had told him that he would be the next king he was only focused on his aim and his eyes were closed for everything and everybody else.
As the king stays the night at Macbteh's castle instead of protecting him from danger Macbeth turns against the king and uses his position of trust as an opportunity to further his own gain and kills him.
He also betrays his country by murdering his king, destroying natural order, because his ambition and greed overcome his patriotism. He acts in an untruthful manner and deceives his subjects. "Look like th'innocent flower, but be a serpent under't". He is supposed to do everything good for his country, but he only looks at his own interrests.
After he killed the king, his fear of taking someones life was gone and he fell into a kind of trance.
He wasn't afraid of anything anymore and nothing could stop him from going for his aim. .
Being king got even more important for Macbeth than his best friend Banquo and other people that were close to him.
As he was afraid of Banquo's son taking his economic position one day he wanted to get rid of him and his father so he sent people to kill Banquo. But as this wasn't enough he even tryed to kill his son so he betrayed Banquo in two ways.
But above all Macbeth betrays himself. His only aim got to be and remain king and he lost all his other wishes. He lost all the people that were close to him by either killing them or making them to enemys by betraying them and his country.
