Salutory Neglect


            The period before 1750 Britain's policy of salutory neglect began to develop America into a more free country. The new "hands off" approach had allowed America to begin moving into an independent country. During the mid eighteenth century, Britain's policy of salutary neglect allowed the economy to boom, religions to be practiced freely, and representation of the people in the government. Without Britain looking over America's shoulder nationalism and freedom began to push to the forefront.
             During this period of time legislation began to be discussed in America. Each region had different policies allowing the people more representation in the government. In New England a convention took place, which gave power to the town officials. In these meetings the officials began to discuss the future of the country. In Virginia a council was started in the House of Burgesses, where a governor was appointed and allowed the people more representation than in England. If the salutary neglect policy had not taken place Great Britain would still have controlled the policies. .
             America had always been an area to practice religion freely. During this period of time Puritans and separatists began to flee to America. Pennsylvania gave the Quakers an area to practice their religion. The act of toleration allowed Catholics to practice their religion in Maryland. No imposing higher power was enforcing laws against religion, so any group could practice their religion freely. During this time Jonathan Edwards and George Whitefield began to preach during the great awakening. This is the first time the colonist began to become unified. If the policy of salutary neglect had not taken place the freedom of religion, which led to the unification of America, would not have taken place. .
             The commercial and industrial areas of America began to expand when the policy of salutary neglect was enforced. There were no navigational laws being enforced so this gave America an economic advantage.
