Mercy and the Misfit

" (474)" The sarcasm in the misfit's statement can be heard clearly as his words border between sweetness and bitterness. The grandmother makes a big mistake in reminding the Misfit of his family when, as he is a prison escapee and a convicted felon, they didn't do him very much good. The grandmother makes a very similar mistake when she says ""I just know you"re a good man, you"re not a bit common!" "Nome, I ain't a good man," the .
Misfit said after a second as if he had considered her statement carefully. (475)" The pause of reflection the Misfit takes indicates that he has thought carefully and is without a doubt that he is not a good man. No one ever likes to hear that they are anything less than perfect and the Misfit is no different. Not only is it brought to attention that he is less than perfect, but it is clear that he has spent time thinking on this before. If, as is the case with most people, his flaws and imperfections are a sore spot with him, he could have shot the grandmother right there with enough reason. However, this is not the case. .
During this open conflict with the grandmother (although it may not seem like such a conflict), the Misfit is struggling within himself. ""I never was a bad boy that I remember of, but somewheres along the line I done something wrong and got sent to the penitentiary. I was buried alive." (476)" The Misfit has issues with his past that he has not come to grips with yet. One assumes that if someone is sent to a penitentiary, then that person would more than likely know the crime that was committed. This is not the case with the Misfit. All he knows is that he was not a bad person, but he was sent to prison where he was forced to spend key years of his life. Obviously he has done something wrong and he does not know that it was wrong, or he doesn't care that it was wrong and doesn't see why anyone else should either. The Misfit brings up Jesus and the fact that He was supposed to have raised the dead.
