"Carnal Knowledge""

Boyle revolves around a young man named Jim who decides to take a "sick day"" from work to enjoy his 30th birthday at the beach. It just happens to be two weeks before Thanksgiving. Little does he know that this relaxing day will change into a whirlwind of events. The rising action occurs when all of a sudden a dog starts to urinate on him during his leisurely nap. When he awakens, he becomes enraged; but is calmed by the beauty of a girl running towards him calling the name of the dog. He finds out her name is Alena Jorgenson and this is her dog, Alf. After scolding her dog, she apologizes and offers to wash his clothes. He realizes that even though he has plans with his family, he accepts her offer. At her apartment he learns about her quitting veterinary school because of the mistreatment of animals. Next, she explains how Alf is her pet due to her rescuing him from an experiment for market boots. This is further climaxed when Jim is starving and invites Alena to go out to eat. He finds out she is a vegetarian. Overcome with the fear of losing her, he says that he also is one. She suspects that he is playing games and she likewise does the same. When he takes the next day off to be with her, she takes him to a protest in front of a fur emporium in Beverly Hills. The best is yet to come when she invites him on a mission to liberate turkeys from a turkey farm. This falling action is compounded when he meets Alena's so-called friend, Rolfe, who appears to be more than a friend. However, Jim cooperates with the plan. An hour later he realizes that Rolfe and Alena are going to Wyoming on a bear rescue. He is disappointed because he acknowledges that there is probably nothing between him and Alena. Life must go on. They bid each other farewell and he resolves his rejection by trying to find solitude in a Big Mac.
