Gift of Prophesy

             The Gift of Prophesy.
             Ellen White World .
Is base on the world that she live in. The author George R. Knight goal is " to portray as accurately as possible within the given space limitations the nature of the world that she lived in and the issues that were important to her time". While first coming upon this statement by George R. Knight. I figured that he would be calling Ellen White teaching in this day irrelevant, but I was wrong. George Knight first starts out with the state of the world before the American Civil war. The world at the times really seem like "The End of Times". On November 1, 1755, one of the most destructive earthquakes in history up to that time instantly leveled the Great city of Lisbon. As many as 60,000 people perished(page13). The 1790's would see the unprecedented upheaval of the French Revolution. Its social and political eruptions reminded people of descriptions of the end of the world (page13).All these events spark a great interest of the last days and brought out the Great Revival (Second Great Awakening). This Revival can be thought as having three Phases. The first took place between 1795 and 1810, largely in the unsettled West of Tennessee and Kentucky. The second Phase focus on revivalism to the east. The third Phase focus on Charles Finney (Billy Graham of his time). The main message of these Revivals was the soon coming of Christ and it was through these periods in which the 7th day Adventist Church appear. The period after the war , was one of great reform.
Meat was handled very poorly, hospitals were places were to poor went to die, many women were slaves to fashion, novels were being read like crazy, theater were harlot hang outs spots. As you can see the world was a rec before the civil war and it was even worst afterwards. A light needed to shine forth in the midst of darkness. Thats were Ellen White comes in .
