Influence of the Media

In today's society parents are not held responsible for raising their children. Instead, the media is blamed when these "troubled teens" act out. Parents have a lot more influence on their children than the media. .
It is the parents" job to teach their children right form wrong and to have good morals. I believe if you raise a child in this way, then the media won't influence them. In the essay Warning Janet Reitman writes that Dawson's Creeks content "is irresponsible and sends an immoral message to teens." I used to watch Dawson's Creek and I still watch shows like it, but I never did any of the crazy things that are depicted in these shows. This is because my parents raised me to know the difference between what happens in real life and on T.V., and that the way television characters behave is not always the right way. .
Parents should also limit what their children watch, particularly with younger children Even if their parents teach them right from wrong, they might not be old enough tell the difference between real and make believe. The parents need to control the amount of television their children watch as well. When their children are a little older the parents think the kids can watch whatever they want, but too much of anything is never good.
The media's job in this matter is to inform the parents as to which shows are good or bad for their children to watch. T.V. shows and or movies should have explicit warning labels, to clearly explain the content on the show for age appropriateness. The T.V. networks should also try to air adult shows later at night so that younger children won't be able to see them. I don't think that these networks should be forced to drop shows with adult content, because we should all be able to watch what we want, as long as we are old enough.
I think that the influence of education and parenting is what matters most. If done the right way, then children will grow up to make good decisions no matter what they see on T.
