Virginia

With the push of immigration into the new world the population of Virginia greatly increased. Before Sandys came to Virginia the population was approximately 700 people. A few years following Sandys arrival the population grew to approximately 3,750 settlers. However, in 1622 the population was again 700 settlers. There were "347 settlers accounted for being slain by Indians," but there were 3,000 dead setters unaccounted for. There were a few propositions for why the sudden death rates increase. These ideas included disease from the immigrants and malnutrition or starvation due to lack of farming (Davidson 11). Without much evidence for the exact reasons for these deaths one can only believe the "propositions" formed for why the deaths took place. Sandys development for such a large and prosperous colony clearly came crashing down with this enormous death rate. Thus, Sandys again had to devise a plan to prevent these deaths and stop the malnutrition.
The production of produce became much needed in the Virginia colony to prevent more deaths and more people from suffering from malnutrition. A law requiring the Virginians to plant corn was strictly enforced. Corn was easy to keep and did not require a lot of attention to grow. It also "sprung up in streets by accident." Sandys did not however support growing of tobacco. "Sandys and many other gentlemen looked upon the "noxious week" as a vice and did everything to discourage its planting" (Davidson 13). From this description of how Sandys does not support tobacco growth one can see that he truly cared about the settlers in the colony and for their health and well being. If he looked only for ways to make money he would have made growing tobacco mandatory rather than corn growing. .
Sir Edwin Sandys helped change the people and the environment of the Virginia colony. One can see how in a few years Sandys bettered the colony and the environment just by a few simple changes.
