Success in the workplace should depend on effort, talent, and intelligence, but all too often is not. Laws are in place to make sure no company bases their hiring practices to include race, religion, ethnic background, etc, but the fact is, when a company does not hire you, they are not required to tell you why. So these so called equal opportunity employers may be anything but equal. This does not even always just include attractiveness, but nationality, or skin color as well. Some people may think that people of Asian decent are Superior to African-Americans, or Caucasians in a particular job field, and base their hiring practices on that assumption. This also accounts for discrimination in the workplace.
Discrimination not only happens in the workplace. One of the more common places where looks are the determining factor is in court, when deciding the guilt of a crime. If a Caucasian, and an African-American were placed side by side, and a person asked who was guilty of car theft without knowing any facts, nine out of 10 times, the African-American would be chosen as the guilty party. It is these assumptions, and this prejudice that hurts our country. It is innocent until proven guilty, not guilty if you"re black, or Hispanic, or any other reason other that there is proof beyond a reasonable doubt. No one says, "Hey his DNA matches, but he doesn't look like a killer", when acquitting a white person, but they do say, "There's no direct proof, but he's black", when convicting a black man. Racism, and physical discrimination is integrated into our society, and it's unfair to everyone.
I believe judging people based only on their appearance, whether it is physical beauty, or ethnicity, or anything else, can only disadvantage people. People deserve to be judged only after all the facts are known, whether it be for a job, a promotion, a date, marriage, or even whether or not they are guilty of a crime.
