Genetic Pets

This newspaper article is about new pet fish being genetically engineered in Texas. The GloFish is a zebra fish that has a sea coral gene in it that makes the fish look bright red in normal light and fluorescent under ultraviolet light. The company called Yorktown Technologies in Austin Texas calls the fish "a miracle of science". The GloFish is being bred in two different locations, Segrest Farms in Gibsonton Florida and 5-D Tropical in Plant City Florida. Right now there is no demand for the fish, a spokeswoman named Jennifer Pflugfelder for a large pet supply company.
Any type of genetically engineered animal is hazardous to the environment. Fish are flushed down the toilet when they die and then will eventually go out into the oceans. If a GloFish is eaten by another fish this can cause damage to the marine environment. Genetic engineering can lead to serious deformities. There are over 6,000 known disorders that are due to the mutation of a single gene. These disorders can cause a deformity in growth, development and health. This ignorance makes it possible for the genetic engineering to happen. If more people were presented with the facts surrounding genetic engineering they would realize that this is our future. Man is always trying to make nature better by altering it but in reality they are destroying it.
The article seems to warn consumers that if they buy this sort of pet it can be hazardous to the environment. This article did a terrible job of explaining to the readers how dangerous it is to have these fish as pets. I had to look all over the Internet to find more information about it. The article makes it look like having one of these pets is the new fad. The article looks more like an advertisement then an article. The consequences of having a GloFish are dangerous but the article doesn't send that message across. The article tries to sell the fish instead of disapproving the fish.
