Why did Canada unite as a Country?

            
             Question: Why did the four provinces of Canada unite together to form a country in 1867? .
             The four provinces in Canada united into a country in 1867 to defend themselves against the United States. One reason for this was the fear of possible American invasion. Another reason they united was to ease conflicts between English and French speaking residents. Another was because of the concept of the Manifest Destiny had said that the United States should control all of the North America.
             During the Civil War, the United States cut off the Reciprocity Agreement, a partial free trade pact, which they recently made with the colonies of British North America. That meant that Canadian goods were limited to North America. North America (Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia) wanted to become free and independent in order to control their own food industry. The United States had threatened the North Americans that if they don't go along and help with U.S. conflicts that they would come after them and make another war. The four provinces thought it out and became a country to join forces. .
             French and English North Americans wanted to settle together instead of fighting against who's language to agree on. The French North Americans feared survival of their culture because the English population was growing rapidly. The French wanted to have Catholic schools, since most of the French were Catholic but the English wanted to have public schools. It was impossible to agree on one, so they agreed to make both catholic and public schools. From 1840 to 1867 Ontario and Quebec joined into one colony within British North America. Together, they decided to unite into a country of French and English speaking Canadians.
             There was the belief that it was the destiny of the United States to control the entire North American continent. So the four provinces in North America, feared that the United States would try to take over the colonies of British North America.
