Finally, the narrator admits to not have been in a fight since sixth grade against a kid with "sleepy eye and two streams of mucus depending from his nostrils" So before the night has really begun it is apparent that these three boys are no the bad boys that they think they are.              When Digby, Jeff, and the narrator get into a situation they claim to be able to handle, their toughness gets put to the test and doesn't pass. By mistaking a 57 chevy for one of their friends, they find their selves face to face with a pissed off, very strong, very bad character. So now he has this weapon which he has never used before and because he lied to himself he's stuck in a situation where he is forced to use it, something way beyond what he is capable of. He runs at the bad character and hits him right over the head with it. "Rattled, I dropped it in the dirt, already envisioning the headlines, the pitted faces of the police inquisitors, the gleam of handcuffs, clank of bars, the big black shadows rising from the back of the cell- His mind flashes through possible repercussions for his actions and we could now see for sure, this is no tough guy.
