Doctors call those similar disabilities pervasive developmental disorders, or PDDs. About one in every 500 children has some type of autism or PDD. Children who have autism usually start having symptoms between the ages of 18 and 36 months. More boys have autism than girls.
             Autism is not contagious you cannot catch if from someone who has it.
             What Causes Autism?.
             Nobody knows for sure what causes autism. Some scientists think that some children might be more likely to get autism because it or similar disorders run in their families.
             Knowing autism's exact causes is hard because the human brain is very complicated. The brain contains over 100 billion nerves celled neurons. Each neuron may have hundreds or thousand of connections to other nerve cells in the brain and body. The connections (which are made by releasing neurotransmitters) let different neurons in different areas of the brain - areas that help you see, feel, move, remember, and much more - work together.
             For some reason, some of the cells and connections in an autistic child's .
             Brain - especially those that affect communication, emotions, and senses - do not develop properly or get damaged. Scientists are still trying to understand how and why this happens. .

             Social Symptoms:.
             From the start, most infants are social beings. Early in life, they gaze at people, turn toward voices; grasp a finger, and even smile.
             In contrast, most children with autism seem to have tremendous difficulty learning to engage in the give - and -take of everyday human interaction. Even in the first few months of life, many do not interact and they avoid eye contact. They like being alone. They do not like attention and affection and do not accept hugs and cuddling. Later, they seldom seek comfort or respond to anger or affection. Unlike other children, they rarely become upset when the parent leaves or shows pleasure when the parent returns.
