Hamlet

The play "Hamlet" is synonymous with Shakespeare and English literature in general. Many consider "Hamlet" to be the crown jewel of Shakespeare's literary works. Hamlet is also synonymous with tragedy, perhaps the best representation of tragedy to be portrayed through theatre. The story of "Hamlet" forces whomever views it to see how terrible and tragic life can be. It does this by showing all of mans true failings. A lust for power, a taste for corruption and betrayal and perhaps worst of all our absolute need for vengeance over those who have wronged us. I have no doubt that Hamlet will continue it's reign as the most tragic play in English literature. This is unless of course someone comes up with a story that is somehow worse than a man having everyone he loves conspire against him and eventually be the cause of his own demise. .
In the play the main character Hamlet returns home after receiving news of his fathers death, and his mother's rather swift marriage to his Uncle Claudius who has hastily taken the throne in his father's absence. This is a tragedy in itself but pails in comparison to the events that transpire in the following acts. While at home the ghost of Hamlet's father appears before him and tells Hamlet that it was his own uncle, Claudius who had killed him and that he must take revenge. The ghost's words were "A serpent stung me; so the whole ear of Denmark is by a forged process of my death rankly abused: but know, thou noble youth, the serpent that did sting thy father's life now wears his crown". Hamlet is deeply disturbed and mentally anguished to learn that Claudius would do such a thing to his poor father. Hamlet however still has some doubts and sets out to prove to himself that Claudius is in fact the one who murdered his father. .
Hamlet, in an attempt to cause Claudius to admit his guilt pretends to have gone mad. However by doing this Hamlet causes great hardship, and agony to Ophelia, who does not know what to make of Hamlet's inane ramblings.
