Anastasia

Many have heard the tales of Anastasia Romanov, a young Russian princess that has been the subject of much controversy throughout the years. The fate of all the Romanovs is one of the most enduring historical occurrences of the 20th century. Cloaked in myth and mystery, fuelled by deception, sustained by romance and beauty, and set against the backdrop of revolution and world war, the story bears a power that renders it almost whimsical. The shadowy facts that mask the Romanovs" fall have generated their own breed of conspiracy and speculation. Though there are myths surrounding every aspect of the Romanovs" assassination, Anastasia's story is the one that still evokes controversy to this day. Much of this debate stems around the death of Anastasia. When speaking of her story everyone has his or her own beliefs. Some believe that she died with the rest of her family, some that she survived and later took the alias of Anna Anderson, and others still believe that it was not her, but rather her sister Marie that survived. .
Though many people believe different things, the stories surrounding Anastasia's survival are more likely a modern fairytale. The story is not a historical fact, but rather a fanciful tale. If you listen to the story, it is easy to assimilate it with Cinderella, The Ugly Duckling, and Sleeping Beauty. It is these fairytales and more all rolled into one. It fits very well into this category; especially with the release of a Disney movie conveying it exactly as the formerly mentioned stories do their whimsical tales. This is a fanciful tale, and it would fit better into a child's storybook than a historical biography. I will not deny that Anastasia Romanov is an intriguing historical figure but it is the story of her survival that I feel would be better suited to something other than history. As I will go on to prove, this is merely a romantic myth: Anastasia Romanov did not survive the murder of her family in 1918.
