Two in One

After her throwing herself at him he persistently refuses. However, he eventually gives in to a kiss. That night Birtilak returns with deer for him, and in return Gawain gives him a kiss. The second morning he greets the wife as she enters the room. Today she is able to come away with two kisses. So that night Gawain gives Birtilak two kisses, and Birtilak gives Gawain the wild boar he hunted. On the third morning however is when Gawain wasn't as perfect as he thought he was. The wife could not entice Gawain with herself anymore so she offers him her ring which he also declines. She then offers him a green girdle which would prevent death to the one wearing it. He gladly accepts this. When Birtilak returns home with a fox for Gawain, he does not give anything in return. His desire to live has proven a fatal flaw.
This part of the story has a more moralistic approach. Gawain is to keep his word to Birtilak, but he does not. This shows the main character lying, which is something bad that one should not do. And he will pay the price.
Gawain heads off to pay his visit to the green knight the next morning. When he arrives he is greeted by the sharpening of an axe and then by the green knight himself. On the first try of cutting Gawain's head off he flinches so the knight stops, on the second time he didn't flinch and the knight stops to commend him on his bravery, and on the third swing the knight barely cuts Gawains neck. He then reveals himself to Gawain as Birtilak. And says:.
First I flourished with a feint, in frolicsome mood, And left you hind unhurt "each and here I did well By the fair terms we fixed on the first night; And fully and faithfully you followed accord: Gave over all your gains as a good man should. A second feint, sir, I assigned for the morning you kissed my comely wife "each kiss you restored. For both of these there behooved but two feigned blows by right.
