"The self-worth theory assumes that a central part of all classroom achievement is the need for students to protect their sense of worth or personal value (Covington, 1984, p. 5)." This theory of motivation applies to me in that, one of the main reasons that I began to attend college was that I was feeling "dumb" about myself. (which is also the theory identified because I want to be smarter) I felt like I was not worth anything (this thought was based on salaried offered to me that were no where near enough to take care of my child with.) and I felt like school would be the answer. This could also be considered an intrinsic theory of motivation. I could be challenged as well as be learning, I would be proud of myself and I would be accomplishing something. .
I am attending college to be a RN, not a LPN or a CN. I need to succeed at nursing. While a LPN or a CN is a great career for some people, it is not for me. Being a LPN would make me feel as if I were "playing" nurse, I would feel very limited to what I could do for my patients. I need to be the best that I can be. .
Within the Choice Theory of Motivation, five needs of humans are: the need to survive and reproduce, belong and love, gain power, be free, and have fun. I attend college also because I know that in the future I will be able to survive off of the salary that nurses make. I will be also be free from my mother and able to be independent.
