Goals and the Motivation Theory


            Motivation is a psychological element that has the potential to lead into a process which enables an individual to act towards a certain goal. There are many motivational theories that have been developed over time in purpose of analysing psychological foundations of motivation. The psychological theories of motivation are used in numerous pathways, one of which that involve development of organisations. .
             Two theories of motivation will be analysed and applied to a pre-existing organisation in order to achieve enhanced work performance. These theories include; the self-determination theory, and the goal setting theory. A two week reflective journal involving records of periods of high and low motivation will be used to analyse the above chosen theories. .
             The self-determination theories (SDT) was initially developed by Richard Ryan and Edward Deci in hope of analysing motivation and develop strategies to support internal tendencies to understand and encourage effective behaviour. SDT is an acknowledged theory that is often utilised in organisations in conjunction with the leader-member exchange theory (LMX). The linkages between these two theories correlate due to their relation of addressing similar attributes to work related situations. .
             The goal setting theory of motivation initially found by Dr. Edwin A Locke, follows basic principles of setting goals in a systematic and realistic manner in aims to achieve success and motivation through successful outcomes. It is a widely implemented theory in organisations as it has been proven to be effective on boosting employee morale and performance through goal setting strategies. The basic structure for the goal setting theory to be achievable, there are structural key points that need to be implemented. These include; relevance, challenge, commitment, feedback and, complexity. These two theories reflected in the two week journal and measured against real life applications in an organisational setting will allow a clear and in-depth analysis of how they could be applied to enhance work performance of employees.
