Human Issues

People unfortunately do not think of changes to be made unless an act happens that force us to improve on the current method of construction and development of a building or city, most of the time change comes from tragedy. In the later half of the 19th century land started to become overly expensive and the common person could not afford a place to live. During this time when the land became to expensive new methods were developed to build taller buildings that could fit more people in less space. The ethical question of this new development was: are people going to be forced here, in these small, non-private cubes because of land price inflation? Most people did accept these conditions because of convenience of work and home. These buildings in fact helped cities to grow and prosper. Since this method of development so well accepted by the public, it continues to be used and expanded upon today. These buildings also gave way to new developments in this genre of building types, namely elevators. These inventions allowed people to easily move up and down a building incase of an incident where evacuation was critical. Elevators also allowed handicap people to get to other floors more easily than by stairs. This issue is a major factor in modern buildings; handicap accessibility is a priority in large-scale buildings. Ethics in new construction dictate people to accommodate all types of people. These traits may very from ramps to wider doors for people in a wheelchair to the way a door may swing. It is impossible to please everybody and this is why certain ethics are hard to maintain. The government sets codes for all public buildings to maintain an ethic in the way the building treats its occupants. In the past when there was no regulatory method of conduct, and these ethical suggestions were in the hands of the designer and not the publics like it should be. This is a good standard that should be upheld because everyone should be treated equally.
