The Roles of Women

In today's society women are able to do anything men can do and in some cases better but in the time that A Raisin in the Sun was set women were supposed to stay at home and cook, clean and take care of the family. It wasn't really heard of for a woman being head of the house. Walter and Ruth often got into huge arguments because Ruth didn't make Walter feel like a man and he always thought that she was trying to undermine him. Walter and Beneatha would also often have arguments because Beneatha want to go to school to become a doctor and Walter thought that she should know her place as a woman and be a nurse. Even though in that time if a woman worked in the field of medicine she was usually a nurse and not a doctor I feel that Walter was jealous that Beneatha, a woman, was going to become a better and smarter person then him and that scared him to think that a woman would make more money then he would and that a woman could really make a difference in the world.
The role of black women seemed to contain more work then that of white women. Even though societies view of women was to stay at home and care for their family, black women sometimes had to take care of their family and the family of whites in order to bring more money into their household if their husbands weren't able to make a sufficient amount of money to support the family. Even though Walter felt that he and only he should be bringing home "the bacon" because he was the man of the house, his wife and his mother worked and he wasn't very happy with that. The main topic of most of the arguments between Ruth and Walter was over the feelings that Walter had of Ruth trying to step out of her "place" and control his life.
Today women can be whatever they want to be according to society, but men still try to put women in their "places" by telling them that they can't do and be what they want to be. Men today think that they have to compete with women at everything and always be better then them to maintain some kind of image.
