Antisocial Personality Disorder

Antisocial personality disorder (ASPD) is a very misunderstood disorder. Often called "sociopaths" "psychopaths" or "moral insanity" the clinical definition of Antisocial Personality disorder is a psychiatric condition characterized by chronic behavior that manipulates, exploits or violates the rights of others. Many times this behavior is criminal. (www.1uphealth.com/health, Antisocial Personality Disorder) Antisocial Personality Disorder is the most common personality disorder, effecting 3.5% of adults in the United States (3% of males and .5% of females) display symptoms of ASPD, and the majority of these cases don't know about it. The reason many don't know about ASPD is because many of the symptoms are looked at as cases of criminal behavior. Some of the symptoms of ASPD include:.
             - Repeated criminal acts - Deceitfulness.
             - Impulsiveness - Lack of remorse.
             - Irresponsibility - Compulsive lying.
             - Repeated fights and assaults - Excessive aggression or irritability.
             - Disregard for others safety - Manipulation .
             Because many of these symptoms can be seen as criminal behavior it can be very hard to diagnose someone with Antisocial Personality Disorder. There are many different theories as to what causes Antisocial Personality Disorder. .
             There are many different theories as to what causes Antisocial Personality Disorder. One of the biggest debates in the possible causes of ASPD is the nature verses nurture theory. If the way someone is raised helps to determine whom they are as apposed to where they live and the society and culture around them. Another theory is that abuse, such as physical, psychological, sexual or substance abuse contributes to the onset of ASPD.
             Along with many theories as the cause of ASPD there are many different theories as to how to treat it. The most agreed upon treatment for those suffering with ASPD is group therapy. Many who suffer from ASPD don't have an outlet for expression.
