Courtly Love

The suffering people are referred to as "sailors" and "the sea shall free them". The main character describes Jesus as "almost human". This means that Jesus can relate to how people are feeling and can better understand how to help them. .
In the third stanza, Suzanne is being described again. However, this time, the comparisons between Suzanne and Jesus are more obvious. The reader may even believe that Suzanne and Jesus are the same person. The poem states, "Suzanne takes your hand and she leads you to the river." This line shows how, like Jesus, Suzanne is a leader. Suzanne is taking her followers to the river. The river is considered a sacred place and quite possibly a place of salvation. The reader becomes aware that Suzanne lives in poverty by the way she is dressed. Suzanne is dressed in old rags. This is similar to what Jesus would've worn in his time. Suzanne's clothing is important because it shows that she isn't materialistic and wouldn't put other things before helping her people.
The overall product of the equation between Suzanne and Jesus is that the narrator perceives them both as leaders and saviors who provide unconditional love for the people. Suzanne tells the main character that he has always been her lover. This is the same kind of love that Jesus has for his people. Suzanne's love for the main character is pure and pure love is the most important type of love. Jesus" purpose is the same as Suzanne's. Suzanne wishes to open up the eyes of the people and let them know how important love and compassion is. Suzanne always sees the positive sides of things and wishes to teach the people "where to look among the garbage and the flowers". The world is filled with bad and evil things, but Suzanne has learned to see the good side of everything and every person. .
The poem ends with the image of Suzanne holding out a mirror for the main character to look into.
