10 Commandments

The ten commandments is a debate that many people get into. I believe that they shouldn't be posted in front of public buildings. Yes, the commandments are morally based, but we have to think about the whole separation of church and state thing. There would be no problem with posting the commandments if they didn't seem like they were trying to enforce religion. .
First, there is the commandment which states, "Thou shalt not have any god before me." There is no way anyone will be convinced the Ten Commandments are there for a secular purpose. It blatantly supports a religious view, as you will see in the many references to the Sabbath and to the "Lord, your God." Placing this in front of a public building that is funded by the government is equivalent to saying the state endorses this religious belief. The Koran has many passages that allude to non-violence. I do not see anyone arguing to have this posted in front of buildings. You can't say one religion can have this privilege and another can't. You have to be fair. If you let people post the commandments, you have to let other religions post their teachings. However, if we do that, the buildings will only turn into display cases for religion. The state should have nothing to do with religion in order to be fair to all people. .
The Ten Commandments can also offend others by it's references to God. Back to the commandment about no other gods before me. Some people don't believe in the Hebrew and Christian God so it is like you are telling them their religion is wrong. In everyone's eyes, their religion is correct so of course people can get offended. .
People argue that if you don't like something just ignore it. That's fine, but why should people be forced to ignore something that isn't neccessary. If someone was cursing in front of your young, impressionable two year old, would you just ignore it. No, you wouldn't because you don't want your child being influenced.
