Be Ye Men of Valor

"Arm yourselves, and be ye men of valor, and be in readiness for the conflict; for it is better to for us perish in battle than to look upon the outrage of our nation and out alter." This is a quote from Winston Churchill's "Be Ye Men of Valor." Winston Churchill was a combination of soldier, writer, artist, and statesman. He was not so good as a mere party politician, but he stood out not only as a great man of action, but as a writer of it too. "Be Ye Men of Valor, is one of his most famous speeches that he has made. In it he addressed Great Britain about the breakthrough through the French lines and that the German infantry had advanced. Throughout his speech he tries to instill confidence about the British and French efforts to prevent Germany's invasion.
Just a few hours after Nazi Germany invaded Holland, Belgium, the Netherlands, were called to replace Neville Chamberlain as British leader with Winston Churchill. On May 13, the day after the German invasion of France, Churchill stated "I have nothing to offer but blood, toil, tears and sweat." On May 19 1940, with hope of saving France from Nazi occupation, he appeared on national radio for the first time, and called for a struggle to the last breath against Nazi conquest and oppression. On June 22, France signed in armistice with Germany, leaving Britain alone in its resistance against Nazi Germany. With British armed forces outnumbered by their German counterparts in almost every respect, and U.S. aid not yet begun, it seemed certain that Britain would soon follow the fate of France. However, Churchill promised his country and the world that the British people would never surrender--and they did not. The turning point of the war came in 1941, when Churchill took advantage of his opponents' mistakes. Hitler's invasion of Russia brought Russia into the war, and Churchill seized the opportunity of welcoming a powerful ally with both hands.
