Story of an Hour

Is any relationship perfect? I think many people would agree they are not. The relationship between Louise and Brently Mallard was far from perfect. Love for one another was not their problem; it was the lack of respect for each other. Some clues indicating that this relationship was not a "good" one are, Mrs. Mallard stating the word free after hearing of her husbands death and Mrs. Mallard wishing for a long life when just the day before she was dreading a long life. A sign that indicates her love for her husband is the fact that she dies of a joy that kills after seeing he is still alive. .
Free is not a word a woman would use after hearing her spouse has just died unless she felt trapped and unhappy before. When Louise is alone in her room she says the word free, "When she abandoned herself a little whispered word escaped her slightly parted lips. She said it over and over under her breath: Free, free, free!" (27). This is an obvious sign that she felt trapped in her marriage, like she couldn't be herself. A relationship should allow people to love each other for whom they are and share one another's uniqueness. This characteristic was missing in the Mallard marriage.
As Louise continues to sit in her room she thinks happy thoughts of the days to come. She says a quick prayer wishing for a long life. As she is doing so she recalls just yesterday, feeling unhappy assuming that her life would be lengthy. She was apparently miserable thinking that her life would be long when she was married to her husband and now she finds out that he is dead and is wishing for a long life. She cannot be joyful in her marriage if she would rather die than be married to her husband for a long period of time. Clearly, these are signs of a sorrowful woman who becomes relieved and happy when she learns of his death.
There are a few clues that indicate Louise loves her husband. When she first hears Brently has died she bursts into tears within seconds.
