Lincoln

There are many fantastic examples of heroes and sheroes in the world today and in history. My hero would have to be Abraham "Abe" Lincoln. He was the sixteenth president of the United States of America from 1861 to 1865. He also led the Union against the Confederate Army in the Civil War (1860 to 1865), issued the Emancipation Proclamation in 1862, and issued the Gettysburg Address (1863).
During his term of presidency, he knew it was wrong to own slaves. He then took action on that passion and was willing to .
fight for other people's freedom. He felt so strongly, that he was willing to lead the Union against the Confederacy in America's first and only Civil War. In that war, over 3 million people fought and over 600 thousand died (which was 2% of the population back then). This war was the only war fought by American's on America's soil. .
In 1862, Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation. That said that all slaves were officially free. It wasn't until three years later, though, that the terrible war ended and slaves were really let go.
After a battle in July of 1863, Lincoln dedicated a cemetery to the 6 thousand dead soldiers. When he dedicated it, he gave a short (269 words), but powerful speech called the Gettysburg Address. It had simple language, but conveyed their noble deaths and fights for the country. .
Despite all of the medals, wars won, and famous speeches, Lincoln was a honest-to-goodness man. Born in a log cabin, he grew up to actually become the president of the US! He even had Nebraska's state capital named after him!.
Lincoln is famous as a person and as a magnificent leader. He accomplished many positive historical feats in his time and during his term of presidency. Probably all of them are still in effect today. He's a great role model for me. .
