Stereotypes are oversimplified conceptions placed on individuals, as they are believed by others to conform to a set image or type. Doyle, Linda's boyfriend, is very blunt when it comes to his opinion, especially of Karl:.
Hey is this the kind of retard that drools and rubs shit in his hair and all that, 'cause I'm gonna have a hard time eatin' 'round that kind of thing now. Just like I am with antique furniture and midgets. You know that, I can't so much as drink a damn glass of water around a midget or a piece of antique furniture. .
(Sling Blade, 1996).
I believe that Karl knows what type of individual he is perceived as by his society, just as many other "challenged" individuals are, but is headstrong in enabling himself to fit in and be forgiven, and above all, rid himself from the oppression placed upon him. This is evident when he says, "I wanna be baptized." (Sling Blade, 1996) This is significant evidence to support the fact that Karl is devoted to the success of his release from the institution, as well as the acceptance from those around him. I believe that the screenwriter is trying to clarify to the audience that many individuals who may be in Karl's situation would've simply taken the "easy way out", as that is one of the many stereotypical viewpoints society has placed on people in Karl's circumstance. It is obvious how strong and determined Karl's character is, as he is employed, has made a few friends, and is trying to finally establish a life for himself, beginning with a baptism, in an attempt to gain the respect and approval of the town. It's as though the screenwriter is simply saying that Karl's character type is one which is meant to feel oppressed by society, and will somehow never escape this reality. This statement is somewhat true in our society, as many "challenged" individuals live in homes with individuals in similar situations, with social workers and volunteers for support.
