Ecclesiastes

The book of Ecclesiastes really got on my nerves! A lot!!! Solomon was a great and very wise man, but his writing is like poetry and is really hard to understand. He is mainly writing about the foolishness of a materialistic life. He also tells us about life's problems and talks about experimentations with life.
Ecclesiastes just keeps going on and on about how life is worthless and meaningless (1:2-3). The book keeps saying things like, "the rivers run into the sea but yet the sea is never full, and the water returns again to the rivers and flows again to the sea- (1:2-4). That is really hard to understand! What Solomon means is that human effort is meaningless. We are here on earth for a very short time so all work we do on earth is futile. Our real focus should not be on earthly gain but on what matters in heaven. For example, Elishah was working in the fields doing hard labor on things that would not last. Then he was called by God to follow Elijah. So Elishah stopped laboring on earth to follow God's will for his life. As a result he got to take over for Elijah when he was taken by God. Another example is Bill Gates. He has everything, lots of money, homes and earthly treasures. Does the wealth make him any better in God's eyes than a poor man? No! Bill came into the world without possessions and will leave this world the same way. He labored in vain for his earthly possessions and they will not buy him eternity. Everything that a person gains is from God.
Always believe that God has a plan. There is a right time for everything (3:1).
Ecclesiastes encourages me to try things myself in life instead of waiting to experience them through someone else. If not, I may never truly know what something is like. Work hard to achieve goals in life. The more I do, the more wise I can become (11:4). God is the one that lets me accomplish things (11:6). I hope to accomplish many things in my earthly life and want to make good choices for my eternal gain, not for earthly gain.
