The curse

For example in 1978, one of the most painful of years, the Sox had a 10+ game lead in their division, but managed to blow it to the hated Yankees. However, the BoSox won the last eight games of the season to force a one game playoff. The setting was Fenway Park and the Red Sox had the lead. Then, the now infamous, Bucky Dent came to bat. Dent, which is synonymous with many other 4-letter words in New England, proceeded to do the impossible: hit one over the Green Monster and into the net, which gave the Yankees a lead they would not relinquish. The loss was capped off by hall of famer Carl Yastrzemski popping up to end the game, leaving the tying run at third base. another occurrence in which the Bambino popped his ugly head was in 1986, perhaps the single most know moment of an occurrence of the curse. The Sox overcame a 3-1 deficit in the ALCS against the California Angels, and met the New York Mets in the World Series. The setting: game 6 at Shea Stadium in Queens, New York, with the Sox holding the series lead 3-2. The BoSox scored two in extra innings, and had two outs and two strikes against the Mets with nobody on in the bottom of the inning. At that point, there was an omen: the game hadn't even ended yet, but the scoreboard in right-center field was flashing the message "Congratulations 1986 World Champion Red Sox." Then all hell broke loose. Before you could say "choke," the Mets had scored three runs off relievers Calvin Schiraldi and Bob Stanley. The winning run scored when a weak ground ball somehow eluded first baseman Bill Buckner and squirted through his legs and into right field. That image is burnt into the memory of every Red Sox fan out there and will haunt them until the day they die. Looking back, many people wonder why Buckner was left in the game instead of being taken out for defensive reasons. It boils down to the fact that John McNamara, the Red Sox manager, wanted him to be on the field when they won the World Series.
