Perspective War Mid term

Fogarty's chapter "Methods of Promoting Peace" (in his book War, Peace and the Social Order) and David P. Barash's chapter "Positive Peace" (in his book Approaches to Peace) one can extract both similarities and differences. The differences in these two chapters are mainly in structure and ideology. Barash's articles are radical and cover more ground while Fogarty is more conservative and succinct. But the similarities between the two chapters are rather extraordinary. Fogarty utilizes one article to present three major themes which Barash directly correlates in three separate articles ("The Pedagogy of the Oppressed", "The Land Ethic" and "Human Rights"). For example, "The Land Ethic" represents the section in Fogarty which talks about how modern times are changing the way that one can asses the worlds problems. People are beginning to feel the repercussions of free-enterprise and globalization, which is infringing on their rights and making positive peace almost impossible. " The Pedagogy of the Oppressed" offers a solution to these problems; the organization of people into non-violent groups. And finally the "Human Rights" article is going to address the philosophical viewpoint of whether human rights are really worth fighting for. .
In the first article of chapter seven Aldo Leopold talks about a "land ethic". Leopold feels that the destruction of Mother Nature results in frequent misfortunes which presently affect a large part of the population, and in the near future will affect all. For example, the consequences of environmental destruction can actually lead to wars. "Millions of refugees regularly flee environmental disasters such as droughts, floods, famine, and disease. These refugees can also raise international tensions." (Barash, p. 131) In essence, Barash feels that for people to maintain peace they not only have to look out for themselves, but they also have to watch out for their environment as well.
