Actors In Action

The play Good Thing was characterized by an engaging cast who lends numerous physical and emotional outbursts to the already explosive subject matter. Considering that action is the main contributor to the actor's believability, it is no surprise that the essentially high quality acting done through a myriad of urgent actions. The set design of Good Thing is evenly split between a home inhabited by three young lower class kids struggling with the trials and tribulations of life. The stage is also shared as the household of a married couple of counselors enduring a relationship soured by emotional strife. This unique design structure makes the actors of the play utilize the fourth wall in a manner of almost two sets of fourth wall, the audience is addressed as a whole yet it is still the left side which reacts more to the plight of the younger group, while the right side is privy to the dealings of the Roy family (the counselors). This is not overwhelming, and is not at all a negative, but rather a product of the set design. The actors do a great job of projecting to the entire audience, they are clear to there objectives and react well as a whole. The interplay is explosive, abundant and not wasted on anything. .
The tempo of this play is ever changing. Generally speaking, the adolescents are usually involved in quick hitting emotionally packed sequences. The actions of this group of characters are always urgent. Especially regarding the characters Mary, Bobby and there dealings with drugs. These same characters are also very gifted in endowing there surrounding objects with realistic qualities, this can be seen most frequently with the drugs explored. The psychophysical connection gives credence to the emotions and urgency that the characters use in there pursuit of there respective goals. This was shown with the "locking up" of Mary, preventing drug use. The Roy family is less about physical action as more of relationship issues.
