Aphrodite: An Inspiration to Artists

Aphrodite's birth from the water was a consistently interesting aspect to many artists. What is thought to be the "most famous work of this theme is Sandro Botticelli's Birth of Venus."" (Loggia) Since the creation of this painting in the early Renaissance, the Birth of Venus has become a model for artists though the centuries due to the soft features and how Botticelli captured the beauty of the goddess of Love (Loggia). But Botticelli was not the only artist to be "seduced by the myth of the goddess-. A long list artists have paid their tribute to the goddess including the French painter Franzois Boucher. His work, The Triumph of Venus, is painted in a style known as Rococo, a light, playful type of painting. This style was appropriate for depicting Aphrodite "as she frolics with putti-. This masterpiece emits "a mood of delight and joy- (Loggia). .
Another way that Aphrodite has inspired artists has been through mythological influence. With these influences, artists often depict other women as Aphrodite as their way of showing the beauty of the woman. Titian's Venus of Urbino displays one artist that portrayed a woman in comparison to Aphrodite. The reclining nude played a very important part in famous Italian paintings. Also, artists try and associate the goddess with different objects such as roses, putti, and the swan (Paris). Along side of paintings, temples were built, statues were carved and ceremonies were performed to worship the goddess (Paris). The most famous statue carved by an unknown sculptor was found in two pieces in an underground cavern. Aphrodite de Melos, more commonly known as Venus de Milo, in now located in the Louvre in France. Even though she misses her arms and a few pieces were reattached, this Aphrodite is still a symbol of love and beauty (Paris). Even today, art from previous centuries is being displayed for the public to admire its significance and its history.
