Affirmative Action


            
             Affirmative action in American society is one of the most debatable topics found in America, today[rep. America/n]. Cedric Herring, a professor in the Institute of Government and Public Affairs and the Department of Sociology at the University of Illinois at Chicago, states that affirmative action "consists of activities specifically to identify, recruit, promote and/or retain qualified women and members of disadvantaged minority groups in order to overcome the results of past discrimination and to deter discriminatory practices in the present- (Herring)[actually unnecessary since you have mentioned his name in the quote intro). The first arena, in which,[no commas] affirmative action can be used in is the American workforce. Affirmative action, in this case, is used to help minorities receive jobs at places, where minorities are underrepresented.              As an assignment in my English Composition II class , my professor ask[past] my classmates and I[case; asked me] to analyze five articles dealing with affirmative action to accomplish a better understanding of this important topic. After reading and analyzing all five articles, I was very surprised to find that there were many different views on affirmative action. Out of the five articles I read, I found that two writers supported affirmative action, one writer opposed the policy, and two writers had mixed feeling[pl] about affirmative action.
             To begin with, two writers supported the use of affirmative action in today's society. First, Cedric Herring in the article, "Setting the Record Straight on Affirmative Action-,[inside] justifies that affirmative action is beneficial and is necessary for minority success by giving support throughout his article.
