MARY THE MOTHER OF JESUS

             When she was about fifteen, Mary's parents made plans for her to be married, as it was customary in those days. They chose Joseph of Nazareth, a carpenter, as her husband. The engagement took place and Mary returned home to wait for a year before she would be able to live with her husband as his wife, but then, something happened.
             Young Mary of Nazareth had the exceptional privilege of being mother to the very Son of God. .
             Mary was a descendant of David, but she was descended from David's son Nathan, while her husband Joseph was a descendant of David's son Solomon (Matthew 1:1-16). Mary's life was quite satisfactory. She was a remarkable person. She had recently become engaged to a carpenter, Joseph, and was anticipating married life, until the angel Gabriel made an unexpected visit. Her life was about to change forever. God honored her above all other women by choosing her to become the virgin mother of the Messiah.
             "In the sixth month God sent the angel Gabriel to Galilee to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David" (Luke 1:26-27). What she heard next was the news almost every woman in Israel hoped to hear, that her child would be the Messiah, God's promised Savior. The angel went to her and said, "Greetings, you who are highly favored, the Lord is with you". Mary was greatly troubled at his words .
             and wondered what kind of greeting this might have been. The angel said to her, "Do not be afraid, Mary, you have found favor with God. You will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most .

             High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David and he will reign over the house of Jacob for ever, his kingdom will never end. How will this be, Mary asked, since I am a virgin? The angel answered, the Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you.
