Ideological Function of Casablanca

They were singing and looking so happy to try and escape the reality that they were actually at war. The songs also raised the morale of the people that were singing. This is a great example of the way that the movie is using an ideological dimension as a part of America's expressive culture during wartime.
In conjunction with the music that is played throughout the movie is the music that is played at Rick's Saloon. This type of music is American swing music. This was very appealing to the American soldiers because of their listening to this type of music during their free time at the war. The ability of popular music to lift morale was well known and widely touted among military experts (Conscription of Swing 145). They even used music when they were marching there longest marches. When they heard familiar music it seemed to have unique powers to promote solidarity in stressful conditions. The swing music provided ambivalent reactions among the arbiters of mainstream American cultural life and the elements of resistance were heightened by the crisis atmosphere of war (Conscription of Swing 146). This shows how the movie is using the ideological dimension of American swing music in the movie "Casablanca.".
In the movie "Casablanca," there are two types of hero's that are portrayed. One of which whose name is Rick who is also known as the outlaw hero. He gets this reputation because of many reasons. One of which is his place of residence. He lived above a saloon. Rick also got the outlaw hero title because of his work at the saloon. He gave the bar an attitude of a man's world in the sense that women were nightly bought and exchanged for exit visas (Ray 1). Rick was another version of Robin Hood, in the sense that he operated outside of a corrupt legal system for some higher form of justice. Rick was also like Robin Hood in the way that he kind of robbed from the rich and gave to the poor with the use of his roulette wheel that was rigged.
