Nuclear Weapons

(McNamara, 1998) President Kennedy decided on a military sea blockade. This strategy proved to be very successful and could of possibly saved the world. It was later discovered that not only did the Soviets have inter-mediate range ballistic missiles but also tactical missiles to be used against an American invasion. Also the Soviet commanders had the authority to fire their nuclear arsenal without further permission from the Kremlin. (Gribkov, 1992) President Kennedy's speechwriter called this time "the gun barrel of nuclear war." (McNamara, 1992).
             Now there are many speculations as to why the Soviets had began stockpiling weapons in Cuba. United States officials were well aware of the deployment of nuclear missiles near the borders of turkey. These weapons became operational in 1962; many believe this is the reason for the deployment of similar weapons in Cuba. (McNamara. 1992) Also the Russians were aware of an American military program called "operation mongoose." The objective of this operation was to over throw the Castro government. They would do this through sabotage, infiltration, psychological warfare and military exercises. These plans were ironically scheduled to take place in October of 1962. (McNamara, 1992) When the threat of an American invasion over Cuba was over Khrushchev withdrew his weapons from Cuba. .
             The Cuban Missile crisis is a perfect example of how Nuclear Missiles can protect nations. If the Soviet Union had not put nuclear weapons on Cuba then the Americans would not have taken them seriously. If there were just an army of Soviet men then the invasion would have continued. Since there were weapons of mass destruction involved, more time and consideration went into it. Sending over American soldiers would not just resulted in the deaths of the soldiers but the deaths of many American civilians, and would have changed the world forever.
             In 1979 NATO ministers adopted a "dual track" strategy to counter the soviets decision to deploy SS 20 intermediate range missile.
