New York City: A Comparison and History

In 1624, the Dutch West India Company sent 110 people to the island that Hudson discovered. The thirty French-speaking Protestant families, called Walloons, were to set up a base for privateering and fur trading. The Pilgrims had come to Manhattan Island earlier, which was made possible by the English Virginia Company. In 1626, the population of Manhattan Island was 270. The Dutch West India Company provided many incentives for people to come to their colony, but the colony still grew too slowly. To make up for the shortage of labor, the Company sent black slaves to New Amsterdam. The slave labor helped the city grow much more. The settlers traded weapons and ammunition illegally with the natives which resulted in random violence that halted many Europeans from settling in the New World. The town did not have a very good moral reputation, however, it carried on successful trade with other English colonies. As the town grew more successful, Englishmen from other colonies came to New York. Many religious refugees were also attracted to New Amsterdam because of the religious tolerance displayed by the Dutch. In spite of many unfavorable factors, many were still lured by the booming and widely available economic opportunities that the new colony offered.
A fort was constructed in 1635 just after the building of a great wall, which was named the "Singel". The Wall was meant for protection but was very weak and became more of a symbol than effective protection from outsiders. The flimsy wall was torn down in 1699, and the street which replaced it was called Wall Street. In 1660, many roads have been built, including Broadway. New Amsterdam did not grow as fast as it should have grown due to several factors. The fur trade and piracy, Indian raids, and bad management kept the city down. The Directors did not pay much attention because the town for them was making them profits.
