Loneliness

A woman is sitting in her old, shuttered house. She knows she's alone in the world.
She has no clue who it could be, since she is the only person left living. She opens the door and it is the ghost of her late dog. She is so excited to see him at the door that she picks him up and gives him a hug. Imagine her astonishment when Ruffy calls out, "Hey! Let me down!" She is overcome with joy to have her best friend back. Now she has someone to talk to and share her thoughts with. She imagines all the fun times her and Ruffy will have again. She is so glad to have her best friend back in her life. .
She is underground in her cellar canning fruits and vegetables so she never even knows what is happening outside until she comes out of her cellar to find everyone and everything is dead. Everything is covered in lava and she is petrified. Parts of her house are no longer there and she is all alone. As they lay down to go to bed she realizes that she loves having Ruffy next to her. .
Now it is morning and they are awake. Ruffy explains to her exactly what happened that day. "I was sitting on the front porch watching the chickens run around and watching the kids play when I looked up and realized the volcano had erupted. I tried to bark to warn everyone but no one would listen to me. They just kept playing and doing what they were doing. I continued to try and get their attention until I could not try any longer. The lava was coming and within minutes she knew everything would be gone. But I was relieved because I knew you were down in the cellar and that you would make it through and be okay." .
She explains that she does not understand why the volcano erupted. It hadn't erupted in over 1,000 years. She wishes that the volcano would have taken her along with everyone else. She is miserable living all alone. There is no one to talk to and there is nothing to do. All the plants are dead.
