Bauhaus

The second objective was to elevate the status of the crafts to the status that the fine arts had. The final goal was to establish "Constant-contact with leaders of crafts and industries of the county" (Whiteford 11). These goals were only partially accomplished because of the new war. The Nazis thought that the Bauhaus was considered to be "decadent" and "Bolshevistic" art, and it was forced to be shut down (9). Bolshevistic was something that would support the socialist revolution in Russia. When the Bauhaus was closed many of the architects that were associated with it left Germany and went to other places where it may be more accepted such as the United States (12).
So what type of students attended this school? The students that attended the school were perceived by the townspeople as dirty, lazy, promiscuous, and being cocky about themselves. When the school was first opened many of the students were matured men that usually had military experience, and many were still in shell shock. Others were boys who learned how to paint and sculpt at the academy before and continued with their previous teachers (Reagan 2). Also women came to take up weaving. To get into the school there was an application process that Gropius oversaw. Once admitted the students could not receive full admittance until after the primary part of the schooling was considered to be satisfactory. Then they could choose the area in which they wanted to specialize in. Students also participated in apprenticeships (3). The school was small and it was very difficult to get into, only about 1250 attended the school but only about one hundred of them were there at a time. A downfall to the school that the students saw was that everything that they created in the school was property of Bauhaus. Bauhaus gave all the necessary materials necessary to the students (Whiteford 36). The students left Bauhaus with their hands basically in everything they could grasp.
