While I waited for the lecture, that was going to be presented by Dr. Adenike Davidson, I was sitting around and looking for the room. I found another student that was going to be attending and we started to think about what this lecture could possibly be about. I couldn't find the room, but then when I asked a lady about it she guided me in the right direction. The room was a medium sized room and had four rows of chairs set up. I took my seat and shortly after, the lecture began with Davidson at the front of the room speaking.
The title of the lecture was, "Recovering Duke." Davidson started the lecture by discussing about George Schyler. I had no clue about how this fit into the lecture, and quite frankly I was totally lost, until the point about the magazine came up. She had been studying about Schyler and while she was digging through articles and other pieces that Schyler had written, she stumbled upon a magazine by the name of Duke. .
Duke was an African-American magazine that tried to capture black masculinity. On a side note, Duke came out about the same time Playboy had originated, and was compared to Playboy, in that both magazines were competing in the same type of market. The only difference was that Duke was reaching out to the African-American market. .
The title, Duke, symbolizes a sense of royalty as Davidson put it, but she also thought that the title had something to do with Jazz and the famous jazz musician, Duke Ellington. Davidson thought that this magazine was going to primarily deal with jazz and jazz culture.
