Harold washington

There was not even a single piece of literature that said to vote for Harold Washington except for what appeared on the All Chicago City News which was a bimonthly newspaper. The first ten thousand "Harold Washington for Chicago- campaign buttons were designed by Helen Schiller and paid for by an anonymous person. Washington had to pay for the first campaign literature out of his own pockets because people in his committee couldn't get any one to approve any literature. The people didn't want to be obstructive; they just didn't want to admit that there wasn't any money in the campaign.
The money began to pour in around December. Almost $30,000 of a $60,000 commitment had been given to Washington's campaign and had been spent. The money had enabled the committee to acquire larger offices. On Sunday, January 9,1983, Harold Washington announced the opening of six new campaign sites. He then gave short speeches at each of the new locations and he repeated that the people of Chicago could not afford Jane Byrne as mayor. He also pointed out that the opening of the six new sites was proof that he built the one of the most independent organizations ever. Washington wanted everyone to know that his campaign was structurally well directed. .
At one speech Harold Washington told the audience that he was sick and tired of being called the black candidate. He didn't want to be called intelligent because it was obvious he was intelligent. After his fiery speech the audience gave a thunderous applause to acknowledge that he was right.
Bill Berry jumped on the Washington band wagon in early December and became upset because some of the white that he associated with had ignored him when he asked them for money to support Harold Washington's campaign for mayor. Most of his friends did not have the courtesy to return his calls. He was so hurt about being rejected that he told his story to a Chicago Sun-Times reporter.
