Marijuana and Ethics


            Ethics is defined as the system of human mental activities that allows us to assign a degree of "goodness" or "badness" to a situation, action, or idea based on the societal perceptions of the time. Most of our ethical views are based on whether something hurts something that is alive or more importantly whether it hurts another human being. So where does the medicinal use of marijuana fall in the question of ethics? Its hard to say, marijuana is a very complicated drug containing more than 420 different chemical, 61 (called cannabinoids) are unique to marijuana, and up until recently many of these so called "facts" that were known about this drug were really just opinions of people trying to sway society towards the direction of there view on whether marijuana should be accepted or not. But now there is more and more research being done on this mystery drug and we are beginning to see the real facts, some of which are good and some are bad. .
             Marijuana could be considered, and is by many, more of a beneficial herb than a harmful drug. Just like any other drug (caffeine or pain relievers for example), marijuana is not harmful if used in moderation, and many doctors will agree on this point. Marijuana is safer, less addictive, and has many more benefits than some legal drugs used in today's medicine, such as morphine or cocaine. According to Marijuana As Medicine marijuana is one of the safest therapeutical drugs known and could be used to replace as much as thirty percent of all prescription drugs on the market today.
             Marijuana posses many medical benefits which could be used by wide variety of patients. In fact Physician's Association for AID's Care and National Lymphoma Foundation, among others, all support the movement for legalizing marijuana for medicinal purposes to treat the terminally ill. For people with glaucoma, when marijuana is smoked it has been shown to reduce the intraocular pressure that causes damage to the optic nerve.
