Marathon Dad

             He would race his friends up and down his street and he later ran track in junior high and high school. He has always been in good shape. He is tall and skinny but very muscular. He set city records at track meets in high school. Every time our family drives through Sweetwater Texas, he tells us how he set a city record here in high school. He earned himself a scholarship to Abilene Christian University where he was kept busy studying pre-med and running track. After college he continued to run to stay in shape and for fun. He stays busy with his job and family, but he still finds time to run the top marathons in the world. .
             In 1994 Steve and some of his doctor friends decided to train together for the 100th Boston Marathon in 1997. They decided that it was a challenging goal and that they could stay in shape and have fun training together. All marathons are 26.2 miles long, a lot longer than the 10k fun runs he would participate in around town. There was no doubt in his mind that he would fail. He is an overachiever and when he sets a goal, the goal is accomplished with perfection. .
             The Boston Marathon is one of the top and most prestigious marathons in the world, and it has hard qualifying requirements. The Boston and other big marathons require their runners to qualify. The runners have to send in proof of their age and a previous marathon time and meet the requirements to qualify. To qualify, it takes lots of training and a good marathon time. .
             Steve's first marathon was The Dallas White Rock Marathon in December of 1994. His finishing time was close to qualifying for the Boston. He surprised himself with his good time, and he was very satisfied with his first race. He ran the Houston Tenneco a month later and qualified. He was very happy that he qualified with his time from only his second marathon. He now needed to train harder than ever to finish even faster.
