This medical condition affects roughly one in every four thousand children born in America. There are an estimated two hundred types of this health condition. This is none other then dwarfism. The most common type of dwarfism is Achondroplasia. Dwarfs, or short people, still live fairly normal lives and have their own sports league.
Achondroplasia is the most common of all the types of dwarfism. The gene for this health condition was discovered by a team of scientists from the University of California in Irvine. The average height of a dwarf that has Achondroplasia is about four feet. Seventy-five percent of those with Achondroplasia have normal sized parent. If both parents have Achondroplasia the chance of living is very small, they are most likely to be stillborn or dies shortly after being born. Achondroplasia is characterized by a normal sized trunk, or torso, with shortened limbs. The face also have key characteristics, many little people have enlarged foreheads, a flat nose, the jaw appears to be big, but crowding in the mouth can happen because the jaw doesn't have the room to accommodate all of their teeth. .
When an infant with Achondroplasia starts walking the can become bowlegged or walk in a knock-knee position. Some of these children's leg problems can be corrected with leg braces. They also have weak backs and aren't recommended to be sat in strollers or seats that don't have good back supports because they can develop a hump. .
             .
In children ear infections occur very often because of small nasal passages and the Eustachian tubes malfunction. These dwarfs usually suffer from upper respiratory problems. They are caused by the airway being obstructed. Two of the major symptoms are snoring and sleeping with their neck hyper extended. If their airway is obstructed they can have therapy or a variety of medical procedures to correct it. .
Infants who have Achondroplasia should have their head circumferences measured to make sure their head grows proportionately.
