Berserkers

The modern view of Viking warriors is one of a murderous savage, wearing animal skins, and howling into battle. This view does not reflect all Viking warriors; it mainly reflects a special group of warriors called Berserkers. The name berserk or berserkers mean "bare as shirt" and refers to the berserkers habits of going into battle unarmored. In battle berserkers were thought to of changed into bestial form, or to assume the ferocious qualities of a wolf or bear. It appears that berserkers were religiously-inspired warrior societies. Sagas mentioned berserker gangs with twelve members where new applicants had to go through a ritualistic or real fight to be accepted. .
Berserker gangs had a fearsome reputation of raging fearless warriors charging headlong into battle. This reputation had a devastating affect on opposing forces. Allies were even afraid of berserker gangs because they would randomly pillage friendly villages and rape their own women. They were basically machines that that were villains who kill, loot, and plunder indiscriminately. .
During pitched battles, berserkers became so agitated that they often ground their teeth together or chewed on their shields. Berserkers before battle would bang their weapons against their helmets and howl in a fit of rage. Preperation for battle was referred to as "going berserk". Berserkers were said to be immune to pain in battle. In their fury they would attack their enemies but also everything else in their path, sometimes even their own people and allies. .
The Berserkers used a long rectangular shield unlike the round ones that most other Viking used. It had a clip like handle that slipped over their belts. The clip would hold the base of the shield against their body and their teeth held the top of the shield. Berserkers went shirtless into battle so that the shield would not slide over their shirt. They had a small piece of leather that covered the edge of the shield that they would bite into.
