Bread and puppet

Bread and Puppet uses puppetry as a way of responding to social events in a larger way. There are various small performances and vignettes that use odd music and often obscure imagery. There is also a larger parade and a "circus" held semi-annually in Vermont. All of the musical instruments are made from junkyard items such as tin cans. The message lies in various mockeries of current politics and political history, the military, and also commentary on the environment and education. There is a basic premise of good versus evil and God versus the Devil.
Bread and Puppet creates community through the ideas of participation, shared morality, and concern for current issues. Wherever the travelling troupe goes, locals who are interested are encouraged to participate. The creative process also depends upon group involvement to become better rounded. The idea of bread is directly related to community, as food is a method for congregation. People here find the courage to say what needs to be said, and they find that their perhaps complex or obscure vision can be adapted to the puppetry format. In essence it is a performance, designed for and depending upon the existence of an audience, a form of community in itself. .
Identity within Bread and Puppet is gleaned directly from the involvement with the performance, whether as a participant or an audience member. "The strength lies in unyielding to technique, beauty, and lyricism for its own sake, and by making spectacles of issues and channels for expression. The message is to take it in your own hands, do your own thing." There is a feeling of personal empowerment as an idealistic force through the celebration of the community.
