Seven

This movie has a lot of gore and graphic means of death. This movie tells a twisted story about a serial killer who kills people who have committed one of the seven deadly sins. Kevin Spacey plays a killer and Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman return the favor as detectives. Gluttony, greed, sloth, envy, wrath, pride, and lust--these are the seven deadly sins that are being punished with unimaginable cruelty and calculation by an enigmatic killer. Set in a perpetually gloomy reminiscent of New York, the film follows detective Somerset played by Morgan Freeman, a retiring police detective, as he experiences his final week on the job, reluctantly working with assertive newcomer detective Mills played by Brad Pitt. Mills has talked his reluctant wife Tracy played by Gwyneth Paltrow into moving into the big city so that he could tackle important cases, but his first and Somerset's last are more than either man has bargained for. When an obese man is found brutally murdered in his home, Somerset realizes this is no ordinary killing--someone tortured him because of his appetite. First, an obese man is forced to eat until his stomach ruptures to represent Gluttony, then a wealthy defense lawyer is made to cut off a pound of his own flesh as penance for Greed. Somerset initially refuses to take the case, realizing that there will be five more murders, ghastly sermons about Lust, Sloth, Pride, Wrath, and Envy presented by a madman to a sinful world. Somerset is correct, and something within him cannot let the case go, forcing the detective to team with Mills and see the case to its conclusion. Somerset and Mills continue on a desperate search to find the mysterious John Doe, who is responsible for these methodical murders. As the case builds to a startling conclusion, both Somerset and Mills become more involved than they ever could have imagined. Eventually the case ends up becoming their entire life and Mills faces a horrible reality when he finds that his wife is the victim of John Doe leading him to execute the man he pursued.
