Dead Man Walking


             The film "Dead Man Walking", tells the story of a murder that took place by two men, who killed a teenage couple. This is the background of what the main story is about. Sister Helen Prejean (played by Susan Sarandon) is on a mission to heal the sins of one of the murderers, Matthew Poncelet (Penn), who is on death row. The movie has major themes of faith, redemption, and forgiveness. The biggest theme in the film is forgiveness. The forgiveness of God upon man and the forgiveness of one another.              The film is about Poncelet and his friend who kill a boy and a girl one fateful night. They kill the boy and rape and murder the girl. Poncelet is sentenced to death. Sister Helen is summoned upon by Poncelet to help him get out of this execution. Throughout the film, she goes to many places and through different plans of action to try and stop the execution from taking place. .
             She meets with the victim's parents and with Poncelet's family too. Sister Helen and Poncelet develop this strong bond that many people find surprising. Sister Helen stays next to Poncelet through the final days of his life. The faith of the two gets challenged, but they overcome this challenge by the superiority of the friendship they have together. At the end of the film, we see a montage of what happened that night of the murder in the woods, while Poncelet is heading towards his execution and ultimately dies. .
             The greatest theme in this film is the power of forgiveness. We see that Poncelet is truly sorry for what he is done towards the end of the film. And as an audience, we see that it was forgiveness that made him realize this. We see this theme in the scene of when Poncelet and Sister Helen are talking about the Bible and talk about the power of forgiveness. "That God always forgives those that admit they are sorry for their sins.
